Notes: THE LAMAR COUNTY ECHO, 24 Aug 1989. 'William Ray Abbott, 57, 575 Church, died Thursday, 17 Aug 1989, at his home. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, 19 Aug, at Gene Roden's Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Othoe Stegall and the Rev. John R. Swint officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Abbott was born 29 Nov 1931, in Taylortown, a son of Sam and Vada Spears Abbott. He married Ethel [Lee] Swint on 24 Apr 1953, in Hope, Ark. He was a registered public surveyor and a member of the Pathway Church of God. He worked for the Texas Highway Department from 1950-53, helping lay out Lamar County roads. He worked for the City of Paris as assistant city engineer, director of public works, and superintendent of the street department from 1953 until 1966. He became a registered public surveyor in 1963 and started his own business. After retiring from the city, he started Abbott Construction Co, and was co-owner of Abbott Furniture Co. He was appointed county surveyor by Governor John Connally in 1969 and laid out many housing additions in the city and county. Surviving are his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Deborah Abbott of Paris; a daughter, Cyndy Nelson of Paris; his mother, who lives in Paris; a brother, Earl Abbott of Paris, and four grandchildren, Ranger and Chance Nelson, all of Paris.'
