Born into slavery on the farm of James Cook about 1853 in Taney County, Jesse was enumerated on the 1870 Census as "Mulatto" in Taney County in the home of John L. Cook. John, later to become Taney County Sheriff, was most likely Jess's half brother, the latter the son of James Cook, Jr. and the slave woman Hannah Cook who spent nearly four decades of her life with the family on their farm along Swan Creek in Taney County.

Jess was a blacksmith most of his life and owned his own shop in Springfield, MO, marrying Diana Murphy in the early part of the 20TH Century. Jesse died January 15, 1930. His Death Cert #797 indicates he is buried in an unmarked grave in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Greene CO, MO. He was annotated on the census of 1880 in Christian County and again in 1900, 1910 and 1920 with his wife, Denia, in Greene County. It is thought he was the ten year old slave boy on the 1860 Slave Schedule in the James Cook, Jr. home in Taney County.

As of now there is no known photograph of Jesse L. Cook.
