Foster was the son of Henry Burnam and Rebecca Sarah Jones Burnam. He first came to what became Howard County, Missouri in 1816. The Burnam Cemetery is located on land that was his father`s. It was first established on the Henry Burnam farm. Henry was one of the first Howard County pioneers. He first settled the land that would become Fayette, Missouri and he ran and operated the first horse mill just above that place. It appears that Foster was involved in all of this as well.
Foster first married a Miss Todd who bore him one son who died while crossing the plains in 1849. His children by Mariah Pemberton are;
