SANFORD -- Ronald, F. Abbott, 84, a lifelong resident of Sanford, passed away in his home, surrounded by his family on Thursday, May 23, 2013. He was born in Sanford on Oct. 17, 1928 the son of Lendall and Evelyn (Pollard) Abbott. Ronald was a 1947 graduate of Sanford high school. After high school he enlisted in the Army where he served as a demolition expert during the Korean War. After serving in the Army he enrolled in SMVTI where he earned his degree as a Machinist. He then joined the Navy where he served aboard a destroyer. Out of the Navy he worked for years as a machinist and then pursued a career in sales.
In 1982 Ronald was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, at this point in his life he choose the direction of community service where he became a member of the board of directors for York County Community Action, became a lifelong member and past president of the Massabessic Lions Club, he also served on the Maine State Governors Committee for the hiring of the handicapped and was an advocate for people with disabilities. He and his wife were long time participants in the Muscular Dystrophy telethon and other various MDA activities.
Ronald also took up painting to fill his time, as a self-taught artist, his works traveled nationally thru the Muscular Dystrophy's Associations art tours, where two of his paintings are on permanent display at the Muscular Dystrophy Headquarters in Tucson, Arizona. He also displayed his art locally in galleries and various fairs where he won many ribbons for his work.
In Ronald's younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his two sons and being outdoors. Ronald was a founding member of the Ossipee Mountain Mountaineers. Though he could not hunt and fish anymore he loved listening to his son's hunting and fishing stories. He very much enjoyed listening to big band music with his wife while playing cards through the wee hours of the night. With Ronald's easy nature, great sense of humor and smile, he touched the souls of everyone he met.
He will be deeply missed by his wife of 57 years, Barbara C. Abbott of Sanford. Two sons, Craig R. Abbott and his wife Kim of North Waterboro, Carl L. Abbott and his wife, Lynn of Hollis; grandchildren, Katelyn, Dalton, Derrek, Bailey, Jake; and great-grandchild, Ella; sister in law Linda Maling and husband Laurin Maling and extended family members.
It was Ronald's wishes that there be no funeral services. Arrangements are under the direction of Black Funeral Homes and Cremation Services Sanford-Springvale. Condolences may be expressed to his family at www.blackfuneralhomes.com
