Ruth Helen Alexander, 92, passed away at Iowa Methodist Medical Center on Tuesday, July 31, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Iles Funeral Homes - Westover Chapel. Burial will follow at McDivitt Grove Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 3 p.m., with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, August 3 at the funeral home.
Ruth was born January 19, 1920, the daughter of William and Bessie Cozad in Albia, Iowa. She graduated from Albia High School in 1937 then moved to Des Moines. On August 10, 1941 Ruth and Floyd Alexander eloped to Missouri where they were married.
Ruth and Floyd relocated to Urbandale in 1946, where Ruth still resided in the family home. Ruth was very active in her community. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary Post #663 for over 50 years and served as President from 1958 to 1959. She also served as a election worker for 24 years and chairwoman for the last two years. Ruth was a member of the Urbandale Historical Society. Ruth was also a charter member of Castle Church, which later became Christ EUB Church, where she taught kindergarten Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, served as president of the women's circle and served on numerous boards through the years.
Ruth is survived by her children, Merle (Shirley) Alexander of Grimes, Sandra (Larry) Fleck of Pleasant Hill and Ruth Gibson of Pleasant Hill; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Floyd; sister, Greta Cozad and brother, Howard Cozad.
