Sycamore (IL) True Republican, Wednesday, 19 Feb 1902

At Glenwood on Sunday afternoon at 4:45 occurred the death of Mrs. William E. Gonter after an illness of four weeks from a complication of diseases. Miss Mattie Godfrey was born at Madison, Kan., February 2, 1868. On January 20, 1891, at Madison, she was united in marriage with William E. Gonter. To them one child was born, Harry, who met his death shortly after arriving in Sycamore, at the age of 19 months, by drowning. In 1893 they came to Illinois, settling in Sycamore in 1894. For a couple of years they lived upon the D. J. Carnes farm west of town. Upon leaving there they accepted a position at the industrial school in Geneva where they remained two years. Their good records there secured for them a better paying position at Fort Wayne, Ind., in a school for epileptics. Being too sympathetic to the place they resigned and after a trip through the west they accepted the present position at Glenwood last summer, entering upon their duties June 1, 1901, where they were highly thought of, both being specially adapted to the work. Mrs. Mattie Gonter was truly a noble, lovely, womanly woman; kind, gentle, affectionate, loving and sincere in friendship and true as steel to her friends; self sacrificing to a remarkable degree she could spare no pains to serve her friends or do them a kindness. Her circle of friends was as wide as her acquaintance. She was a most devoted wife, and to the husband the deepest Sympathy of the entire community goes out, as he was equally as devoted to her. The remains were brought to Sycamore Monday evening. The funeral services will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Steenrod on Wednesday at 2 p.m., Rev. H. D. Kimball officiating, and the interment will be in Elmwood. Mr. Gonter, father of W. E. Gonter, Miss Baker, of Chicago, and Mrs. Hampson, of Glenwood, accompanied the remains to Sycamore.
