Robert Ackenhusen, 88, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012, in Hospice House. Robert was born on April 23, 1923, in Mishawaka, IN, to John E. and Minnie D. (Carpenter) Ackenhusen, who both have preceded him in death. His siblings, Warren Ackenhusen, Ralph Ackenhusen, Helen Huff and Richard Ackenhusen, also preceded Robert in death. He is survived by his nieces, Sharon Whitfield and Norma (Al) Ladyga of Mishawaka, Kathleen Neely and Carol (Lewis) Barker of Florida.

Robert graduated from Mishawaka in 1941 being a member of the National Honor Society. He entered the U.S. Army in World War II and attended the University of Wyoming for a while where he developed an interest in chemistry. After World War II, Robert worked at Ball Band for a year, then used his G.I. Bill to attend Indiana University, where he received a Bachelor's and Master's Degree to teach chemistry and geometry. Robert taught a year at a small township school south of Muncie and then was at New Castle High School for 20 years and Chesterton High School for another four years. He finished his working career by making deliveries for a data processing company for nine years.

For much of that time Robert lived with his older sister, Helen Huff, after her husband died. He especially appreciated his sister who, during the Depression, took some of her early-earned money to build a modest cottage at Lake of the Woods near Bremen, IN. This brought sunshine into the lives of all members of the family. Robert enjoyed traveling and has been to China, Australia, New Zealand, Morocco, just about all the countries of South America, and most of Western Europe. Robert was a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and later the First United Methodist Church. He was a Sunday school teacher while teaching in New Castle, IN. Robert's last years were spent at St. Paul's Retirement Community. Cremation will take place with burial to take place at Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.
