C. Reed Beard, 58 of 407 Northwood Drive, Bedford, a veteran of many years in the limestone business and former State Commander and National Vice-commander of the American Legion, died at 11:15 p.m. Friday at Dunn Memorial Hospital where he was admited last Monday. Mr. Beard had undergone surgery recently and had been released, but was re-admidtted to the hospital. He had been ill since last August.

A native of Wisconsin, he was the son of Harry Calvin and Della Mae McHenry Beard. He married June Enlow May 13, 1933.
At the time of his death he was a sales representative for Bloomington Limestone Company. An Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Beard was prominent in the American Legion at the local, state and national levels. He was also a member of the Bedford First United Methodist Church; Bedford Lodge No. 826, Elks; Bedford Lodge No. 14. F. & A. M.; the Scottish Rite, Valley of Indianapolis, and the Bedford Voiture of 40 & 8.

Surviving are the wife; one son, Rev. Reed E. Beard of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, Kurt and Sheryl Beard of Indianapolis; and two brothers, Merle and David Beard, both of Bloomington. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday in Elmwood Chapel of the Day & Carter Mortuary, with Rev. Ronald Mercer officiating. Entombment will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Military rites will be accorded at the cemetery by members of Gillen Post 33, American Legion. Friends may call at the mortuary after noon Sunday, January 23rd.
