The East family came from Amite County, Mississippi around the middle of 1850's, from there they removed to Louisiana. Mary Jane and Margaret B. were sisters, Margaret married 1858 to Rufus Vanderburg who with her husband and child, Joseph Sidney Vanderburg, were living next door to parents of Margaret, Tarlton East and family; Mary Jane still a teenager. The families removed to Panola County, Texas after the Civil War. In 1890s Mary Jane had married L. L. Cain, and with their four boys had gone to Chickasaw Nation Indian Territory where they settled in a community near Ryan.
