When Jim was 10 years old, he escaped from Hungary with his family to the United States after communists overthrew the government. He became a naturalized citizen in 1965 and volunteered to serve as an Army Airborne Ranger in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968 where he received a battlefield promotion to 2d lieutenant. His teenage years were spent in Ohio, moving to TN after military service. At the time of his death from a heart attack, Jim was founder, owner and president/CEO of Jim Barna Log Systems - one of the world's largest log home manufacturers with homes throughout the United States and twenty foreign countries. He was noted in the community for his work with children and supported many endeavors thru the donation of log building materials. In 2003, he was inducted into the Scott County Hall of Fame. In addition to being a veteran of the Vietnam War, Jim was awarded the Patriot's Award by the Tennessee Army National Guard for his service and support.
