Melvin grew up on a farm in Hallsboro with his three surviving sisters, Barbara, Evelyn and Jo Ann. Melvin graduated from Hallsboro High School in 1964. After high school, he married his wife, of forty-nine years, Linda. The couple resided in Lake Waccamaw where they reared two sons. He spent forty-four years as a service technician for Embarq before retiring in 2012. He served his state in the North Carolina National Guard and also served on the Lake Waccamaw Town Board as Mayor Pro-Tem. During his time in Lake Waccamaw, he also coached the Lake Waccamaw Dixie Youth baseball team. Melvin was a member of Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church. He loved his church and served on various committees including the Board of Trustees and Pastor Parish Relations. He was a former member of the Lake Waccamaw Volunteer Fire & Rescue Squad.
Melvin is survived by his wife, Linda Watts Barnhill and two sons, Melvin Nishan Barnhill and wife, Courtney Barnhill of Cape Carteret and John Ashley Barnhill and wife, Dr. Peggy Barnhill of Whiteville. Melvin is also survived by five beloved grandchildren, Hamilton Stone Barnhill and Courtlend Brooke Barnhill of Cape Carteret, Reagan Elizabeth Barnhill, Ashland Chase Barnhill and Bailey Gray Barnhill of Whiteville. He is also survived by three sisters, Barbara White and husband, Jack of Hallsboro, Evelyn Stanley and husband, Greg of Leland, Jo Ann Nunnery and husband, Bobby of Carver’s Creek.
The family would like to express its deepest gratitude to the Adult Bone Marrow Center at Duke University Medical Center. Their love and compassion were a comfort in his family’s time of need.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Peacock Funeral Home in Whiteville on Thursday, July 2, 2015, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm and a celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 3, 2015, at the Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church by Rev.
