Elizabeth Margaret Altepeter, 87, of Elburn, passed away on Monday, November 10, 1997 at Kishwaukee Community Hospital in DeKalb, where she had been admitted following a heart attack over the weekend.
She was born on June 27, 1910 in North Aurora, the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Smith) Kiefer and graduated from the Little Red School House.
On November 27, 1930, she was united in marriage to Henry P. Altepeter at Holy Cross Church in Batavia.
Together, they made their home in Lily Lake, Illinois until 1974 when they moved to Elburn to enjoy their retirement and their grandchildren.
Elizabeth is survived by four grandchildren, Stephen John (Carol) Herra of Elburn, Philip Daniel (Linda) Herra of Rockford, Mary Elizabeth (Daniel "Chris") Heineman of Sugar Grove and Patricia Ann (Randall) Pattermann of Maple Park; two step-grandchildren, Alan and Brian Herra of Elburn; 10 great grandchildren, Jordan, Megan and Shannon Herra and John, Lindsay and Steven Herra, Daniel Christian Heineman IV and William, Justin and Kylen Pattermann and one son in-law, John "Jack" (Janet) Herra of Elburn.
She is also survived by two sisters, Magdalena M. "Lena" Meyerhofer of North Aurora and Violet P. Kiefer of Crestwood, Illinois; one brother, Elmer G. (Phyllis) Kiefer of Aurora and a host of friends made through the years.
In addition, Elizabeth leaves a special legacy in the hearts of those who loved her.
Memories of her green thumb and her great love of fishing live on with many other remembrances to be shared with generations yet to come.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry P. Altepeter in 1989; one daughter, Florence Elizabeth Herra in 1973; her parents; two sisters, Gertrude Anna Kiefer and Katherine Kiefer Maxstadt; four brothers, Frederick Kiefer on September 28, 1997, Peter Kiefer, Joseph Kiefer and Raymond Kiefer.
She was a member of St. Gall Church in Elburn, where her funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 14, 1997 at 11 a.m. with Fr. Richard Paddock officiating and interment will follow at St. Gall Cemetery in Elburn.
