Col Robert Haden Abercrombie Sr was born on 11 September 1838 in Cross Keys, Alabama, to Milo Bolling Abercrombie and his wife Sarah Lee Haden. He graduated with a law degree from Cumberland University in Tuskegee, Alabama.
Robert married Frances Rebecca "Fannie" Gary on 11 January 1860. They appeared on the 1860 US Census at Macon County, Alabama; Robert was listed as an attorney with $1000 of real estate and $4000 personal estate. On the 1870 Macon County Census, they had three children, $4500 of real estate, and $2000 personal.
Robert and Fannie had six children: Robert Haden Jr, Frances Haden "Fannie", Annie Eliza "Ann", Newton, Robert Lee, and Thomas Gary. Three of their sons died in infancy; the fourth died young.
Robert was Colonel of the 1st Alabama Consolidated during the Civil War. After he was wounded in action at Franklin, Tennessee, He practiced law in Tuskegee and Gadsen, Alabama, and was considered "a gentleman of the highest personal and professional standing."
Robert was accidentally shot and killed in Gadsen, 8 June 1891, aged 52, by his son-in-law, who mistook him for a chicken thief, and was buried at the Tuskegee City Cemetery.
