Daughter of John Guernsey Blakeslee and Jane Brizzee, husband of Laertes James ('Lert') Ballard. She was the mother of Jennie, Oscar ('Burr'), Kate, Dr. Mahlon ('Mel'), and Lucille Ballard. Martha's life was not an easy one. She was the third child in a family of six. Her husband and both brothers enlisted in the Union Army 5 days after their marriage; both brothers died in the war, one at Harper's Ferry and the other in Washington D.C. Her husband Lert was gone the better part of a year, from August to the end of the following May. Both brothers were older than she but not by much. They were her only brothers. She was the founder of the famous 'Mt. Pizgah Praying Band' which travelled through NY and PA in those days.
