Lt. Donald R. Bertrand was from Maywood, Illinois and called to federal service as an Illinois National Guardsman. His company was designated B Company, 192nd Tank Battalion. He trained at Ft. Knox, Kentucky before taking part in maneuvers in Louisiana in the fall of 1941. He was arrived to the Philippine Islands in November 1941 and lived through the Japanese attack on Clark Airfield. Bertrand served in the Philippine Islands and took part in the first battles of World War II involving American tanks. He became a Prisoner of War when Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese on April 9, 1942. He took part in the death march and was held as a POW at Camp O'Donnell, Cabanatuan, Davao, and Bilibid Prison. On December 14, 1944, he boarded the Oryoku Maru. The ship was sunk by American planes. He was next boarded onto the Enoura Maru and died of dysentery in the hold of the hell ship the Brazil Maru and was buried on Taiwan.
