US Soldier killed at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Pvt Adams enlisted into the US Army on March 26, 1866, in St Louis, MO. At the time of his enlistment he was described as 19 yrs old, blue eyes, sandy hair, ruddy complexion and 5'-7". His listed civilian occupation was laborer. Adams was initially assigned to Company H, 3rd Battalion 13th U.S. Infantry Regiment at Jefferson Barracks, MO. In June of 1866, Adams' company was transferred to Ft Rice, Dakota Territory. At Ft Rice he was assigned teamster duties. On March 26, 1869, Adams reenlisted at Ft Stevenson, Dakota Territory. He was transferred to Company F. On December 19, 1872, while on guard duty, Adams shot off his right index finger. He was medically discharged at Ft Randall. On January 27, 1874, Adams reenlisted at Ft. Lincoln, Dakota Territory. He was assigned to Company L, 7th U.S. Cavalry Regiment. Company L was commanded by 1st Lt James Calhoun, brother-in-law of LTC George Armstrong Custer and Captain Tom Custer. During the Summer of 1874, Adams, with Company L, participated in the Black Hills Expedition. At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Company L was attached to LTC Custer's battalion. Sometime during the fighting Adams was killed. After the battle most of Company L was found on Calhoun Ridge and in the area between Calhoun Ridge and Last Stand Hill. Adams' body was not identified. It is likely that his unidentified remains were first buried where they had been found. In 1881 all known battlefield burials were moved to mass grave on Last Stand Hill.
