George Koontz was a farmer. Him, his brothers and sister all changed their last names From Koons upon moving to Michigan. Reason unknown. He married Anna Young and they had two children: Bessie and Audrey

George Koontz was born in New Lexington, Ohio, April 14, 1854, and departed this life at his home in Gladwin, June 20, 1923. He came to Michigan in the fall of 1876, and in 1877 homesteaded 160 acres in Gladwin township, eight miles north and east of Gladwin, where he made a fine farm, with spacious house, large barns, etc., which was the family residence until five years ago. Only a few of the pioneers of those early days remain. He was united in marriage to Anna Young, April 30, 1882, to which union two daughters were born. The wedding took place at the old Section Eight schoolhouse, and the cermony was performed by the pioneer preacher, Rev. I. C. Smallwood.
He was converted 30 years ago in Crusade meetings held in the Wagarville church by the 12th Michigan Crusade Band, afterwards uniting with the church in which he was converted and remained a faithful member until the time of his death. He leaves to mourn his loss, a wife, two daughters, Mrs. Chas. Oglestone of Gladwin and Mrs. Wm. Hause of Bay City; three grandchildren; two brothers, Gilbert of Bay City, and Cyrus of Gladwin; and three sisters, Mrs. Geo. Bile of Barberton, Ohio, Mrs. Henry Waters and Mrs. Roscoe Bellinger of Gladwin.
Funeral services were held Sunday, June 24, in Gladwin, conducted by Rev. T. J. Clemens and Rev. Smith, with interment in Ridge cemetery. Among those coming from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Koontz of Lansing, Mr. and Mrs. A. Buchanan and Geo. Thompson of Saginaw, Mr. and Mrs. Wm Partridge of Flint, Mr. and Mrs. O. A. Peters of Bay City, Mr. and Mrs. James Demaray of Bentley, Mrs. Lina Hause of Mt. Forest, and Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Boman and Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Good of Rhodes, Mich. Gladwin County Record dated 06-28/1923 Column - 5 Page 5
