BUTLER - Lawana Jean, 66, of Edmond, OK, passed away June 8, 2009, in Oklahoma City, OK. Lawana was born in Shawnee, OK on November 27, 1942 to James and Hennrietta Hogan. She married John Butler on October 27, 1961 in Shawnee on horse back. She began her career in the oil and gas industry at Ashland Oil Company in 1968 before moving her work to Eason Oil Company and then The Williams Companies in Tulsa and Enogex. Lawana then began her own business in the industry and operated Esinel Energy. She was also a member of the Natural Gas and Energy Association of Oklahoma and the Edmond Moms Club for 38 years where she served as a past president for 2 years. Lawana enjoyed watching her children and grandchildren compete in rodeos, baseball, basketball and football. She also enjoyed competing in the Senior Pro Rodeo with her husband John, from which she brought home many coveted awards. Lawana is survived by: her husband, John of the home; daughter, Shellie Coughran and husband John of Edmond, OK; son, Kurt Butler of Checotah, OK; sister, Joanne Burk and husband Lloyd of Ada, OK; brother, Jim Hogan and family of Shawnee, OK; grandchildren, Tara Simmons and husband Rusty of Canyon, TX, Baylor Butler of Checotah, OK; and one great-grandchild, Grady Simmons of Canyon, TX. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews and special friends. Lawana is preceded in death by her mother and father. Service for Lawana will be held at 2 p.m., on Friday, June 12, 2009, at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel in Edmond, OK with burial to follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Edmond, OK.
