Birth: May 3, 1853
Illinois, USA
Death: Dec. 13, 1905
Centerville

The sickness of Alonzo Abernathy, mention of which was made yesterday, resulted in his death this morning at 3:30 o'clock at his home, 610 North Sixth street. Mr. Abernathy had not been feeling well since Friday having suffered from an attack of lumbago, but not until Monday night was it ascertained that paralysis of the brain had set in and it was then realized that his condition was critical. He was an industrious, hardworking man and it is believed that attempting to do heavy lifting beyond his strength brought on his sickness. In this death another Citizen employee, Miss Ethel Abernathy, linotype operator, is bereaved, Mr. Abernathy being her father, and the Citizen force feels a deep sympathy for her and the sorrowing relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the First Baptist church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. T. D. Vannoy, and interment will be made at Oakland cemetery. Friends are invited.
Alonzo Abernathy was born in Illinois, May 3, 1853 and at the time of his death was aged 52 years, 7 months, and 10 days. He was married Nov. 17, 1881, to Miss Sarah Moore, and six children were born to them. Three whom are dead. Mrs. Abernathy died Feb. 5, 1894 and the surviving children are Ethel, Nannie and William. Mr. Abernathy had three sisters, Mrs. Amy Ellis of this city, Mrs. Eli Bryant of Mystic and Miss Rachel Abernathy who has resided with the family and had care of the children and the household.
Deceased was a man of quiet habits, a steady worker and consistent Christian. He was a member of the Baptist church, having united during the pastorate of Rev. F. Edwards, and was a faithful attendant and upon the services of the church. He had resided in or near Centerville for about 25 years but came to Iowa when only a few years of age.
