Obituary for Florence Lorene (Finarty) Agan
Florence Lorene (Finarty) Agan, age 91, of Knoxville, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2016, at the West Ridge Nursing Home.
As Florence wished, her body has been cremated and a Celebration of Florence’s Life will be held at 6:30 P.M., Saturday, February 13, 2016, at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville.
Florence was born January 11, 1925 on a farm five miles south of Knoxville, the daughter of Tom and Jessie (Wilson) Finarty. She grew up in the Spring Hill school area. People always said she and her sister, Vera Mae, always had the colts broke to work and ready for the plow. She was active in 4-H and showed horses and Baby Beef in the Marion County Fair, Iowa State Fair, and the Chicago International Fair. She had many ribbons to prove of the work she put into it. In 1942 she graduated from Knoxville High School and helped her dad farm for a year.
On September 12, 1943, Florence and Keith Agan were united in marriage. They farmed for a couple years and then Keith was drafted in June of 1945. Florence followed Keith to the many army camps, for the next two years. The next few years also saw growth in Florence’s family. Cheryl Lyn was born on August 8, 1948 and in June of 1953 Rocky was born.
Florence raised her family, worked at the V.A. Hospital for several years and also on the evenings and weekends she helped Keith build houses.
Florence is survived by her husband of 72 years, Keith Agan; her children, Rocky (Debbie) Agan of Knoxville and Cheryl (Larry) Ward of Plano, Illinois; four grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters; Pat Patty and Alberta Mart; and her extended family of nieces and nephews that she always stayed in touch with.
She was preceded in death by her parents Tom and Jessie (Wilson) Finarty; one brother in infancy, Charles; and one sister, Vera Mae Harvey-Smith
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in memory of Florence to Hospice of Central Iowa and may be left with the Winfield Funeral Home. Condolences may be sent to www.winfieldfh.com. The Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville is helping Florence’s family with services.
