Shirley Eilene Marvin Akers, daughter of Eva and Charles Marvin, Sr., was born February 1, 1935, in Decatur County, Iowa and passed to her eternal reward on Monday, August 10, 2015, at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, at the age of 80 years.

Shirley attended Osceola High School in Osceola, Iowa where she was an outstanding forward on the women's basketball team. While in high school she met Doug Akers at the Hanoco roller skating rink, and they became high school sweethearts. Doug and Shirley were united in marriage on March 21, 1953, in Centerville, Iowa. They were blessed with four children: Debbie, Ben, Sandy, and Dan.

Shirley raised and sold AKC Chihuahua dogs. She also worked for over 25 years at Central Decatur Schools as a cook. After retirement, Doug and Shirley ran The Wood Shop craft business. They were avid gardeners and enjoyed preserving the fruits of their labor and sharing their bounty with family and friends. She was an Iowa Hawkeyes fan and enjoyed attending all her grandchildren's activities. Shirley was a faithful member of Trinity Christian Church in Decatur, Iowa.

Preceding Shirley in death were husband of nearly 60 years, Doug; son Ben; parents Eva and Charles Marvin, Sr.; brothers, Charles "Chick" Marvin, Jr. and wife, Mary Lou and LaVerne Marvin; sister, Thelma Hill; infant brother, Delbert Marvin; parents-in-law, Otto and Frances Akers; brothers-in-law, Glen McNaughton, Harry Coble and wife, Betty, Charles Stuck, Robert Shields and wife, Margaret, and Tom Klinkefus; sisters-in-law; and beloved dog, Penny.

Shirley leaves to cherish her memory, her children, Debbie & Randy Dunn of Storm Lake, Iowa; Sandy & David Higdon of Leon, Iowa; Dan & Veronica Akers of Layton, Utah; sister: Beverly McNaughton of Boone, Iowa; brothers: Gene Marvin & Patty of Lewisville, TX, Rich Marvin & Sharon of Osceola, Iowa; sisters-in-law, JoAnn Marvin of Osceola, Bonnie Stuck of Grand River, Iowa, and Mary Klinkefus of Columbus, Ohio; brother-in-law, Dannie Akers & Marilyn of Joplin, Missouri; eight grandchildren, Cherie Hunt & Brian of Escalon, California, Alex Dunn & Katie of Sandy, Utah, Kiley Schreck & Joel of Leon, Iowa, Stephanie Akers of Layton, Utah, Clint Higdon & fiancé Kassy of Lamoni, Iowa, Maggie Akers of San Francisco, California, Abigale Akers of Layton, Utah and Mark Akers of Weatherford, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Addyson, Aubrey, and Axton Schreck; Aniston and Easton Hunt; and Damon Dunn; cousin, Jerry Bright; close family friends, Gene & Sharon Casey and Tom & Shirley Conley; and many nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
