William Abbey
William Abbey was born in Somerset County, Maine, on December 22, 1843, and died at his home near Hamilton, Kansas, March 16th, 1928, at the age of 84 years, 2 months and 24 days.
On January 1st, 1868, he was united in marriage to Miss Tryphena Elizabeth Hutchins of Bright, Maine. To this union were born six children; five sons and one daughter. two; one son and daughter preceding their father in death.
Like many other young men he heard the call of the West, and in 1879 he gathered his little family about him and left Maine for Kansas, settling in Bourbon County where he lived a few years. In 1885, he moved to Bates County, MO from there in 1894 to Star County, MO. Later in 1919 he again moved to Kansas. This time settling near Hamilton, where he lived till death.
He united with the Methodist Episcopal Church while in Bates County, MO and later in Star County, MO, he united with the Methodist Episcopal Church South, of which he remained a member till his death. At all times trying to live a consistent Christian life.
the deceased leaves to mourn his earthly life his beloved and faithful wife, who more than any one else will miss his companionship and counsel; four sons; W. W of Madison, Kansas; C. B. of Prosser, Nebr.; G.P. and C. E. of Hamilton, Kansas; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Hutchins, of Topsham, Maine; fourteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren, numerous other relatives and a host of friends.
Thus in his quiet way working and building, he in his own way instrumental in helping build a great commonwealth out of the Western wilds, into a veritable garden spot of the world.
The remains were laid to rest in the Hamilton Cemetery. Services were help from the Pleasant Plains Methodist church, Rev. Zeller of Hamilton conducting the services.
