Oscar Nelson, Well Known Farmer, Was Drowned Saturday
-----
The Red river claimed another victim early Saturday night when Oscar Nelson, one of the pioneer farmers of Clay county, broke through the thin ice in the river at his farm eight miles north of here and was drowned. Sheriff McDonald and several farmers in that vicinity were unable to locate the body in their search all day yesterday and this morning.

Nelson had been visiting at the home of friends on the North Dakota side of the Red river early Saturday evening and according to information received this morning he had started for his home on the Minnesota side shortly before 8 o'clock. Nothing was seen of him after he left the Dakota farm house carrying a lantern.

He did not reach his home and early yesterday morning his wife asked farmers of the vicinity for help and a search was started. Nelson's footprints were traced in the snow to the bank of the river at a place where the ice was very thin. It was noticed that the ice close to the shore was broken and it is believed that the farmer fell through at that spot and the swift current of the river carried him under the ice. It was also noticed that there was a coating of oil over the surface of the water where the ice was broken, indicating that the lantern, which Nelson carried, had gone down with him and some of the oil had remained on top.

Sheriff McDonald was called yesterday forenoon and with several farmers he tried to find the body. They were unsuccessful and continued their search this morning. The sheriff returned to Moorhead at noon today and said that no trace had been found yet. It is believed that the swiftly flowing water in that section has caused the body to float for some distance down stream under the ice.

Nelson, who was about 60 years old, had lived on his farm on the banks of the Red river for over thirty-five years. The only survivor is his wife.

BLASTING FOR FARMER'S BODY
-----
Deputy Sheriff George McDonald and twenty farmers of the Oak Mound vicinity have searched in vain during the past three days for the body of Oscar Nelson, the farmer who was drowned in the Red river Saturday evening at his farm eight miles north of this city. Shortly before noon today blasting of the river in that section was started with dynamite but up to 2 o'clock this afternoon the body had not been found.

It is believed by those who have assisted in the search that the body was carried for some distance down stream as the river is unusually deep at that section and the current is swift.
