David Lyle Blanchard was born on March 27, 1947 in Reno, NV at Washoe County Memorial Hospital, to Thad and Rosa Blanchard. David has an older brother, Thad Jr. and a younger brother, Kevin.
After graduating from Red Bluff High School in 1965, David went to Shasta College and made extra money driving the bus. Here David met, Penny Ashmore. Hands down the love of his life. Everything they did was together. Work on the ranch, haul hay, repair whatever was broken, didn't matter they were a tag team.
David continued his education at Shasta College and at Chico State, while Penny worked at the Olive Pit so they would have enough money to get married. David worked and went to school. David and Penny got married on July 1, 1967 in the El Camino Methodist Church.
In 1969 David was eligible for the draft. He served in the Army and did his basic training at Fort Lewis in Washington. He was transferred to Fort Sill, Oklahoma to Artillery School. David was NCO eligible and went through the accelerated artillery training. David was deployed to Vietnam in August 1970. During his year in country in Vietnam he was stationed with the 102 Howitzer Air Lift, then sent to Cu Chi to the 8th Howitzer Battalion Division USARV. He served as a crew chief until his early out in July 1971. His rank was Sergeant.
Too tired to finish Chico State, David worked for LP and farmed on the ranch. He worked in the Reman Plant tailing finger joint, learned finger joint cut line, and drove forklift. Had the opportunity to become the lead man and ran the floor shift for 5 or 6 years. That worked into Swing Shift Supervisor which he did for 17 years. The went to Supervisor/Leadman combo. The last 4 years he was day Shift Production Manager in the Reman Plant.
LP sold to Fibreboard and went from production to safety manager. When Fibreboard sold to Sierra Pacific David took a job with LP at their Samoa operation as the Safety Manager. David lived on the coast, while Penny was teaching and running the ranch. David's roll changed again and became the Regional Satety Director for all Western Division. He was 1 of 6 Regional Managers. Twelve safety managers reported to Dad and he traveled to their locations for inspections and reviews. In 2001 after 9/11 LP downsized top management and Safety was rolled in Human Relations. So he "exited" as he called it.
All the time working at LP from 1986 to date David dealt with Wagner's Disease. In 1986 he almost died. But the doctor's figured out how to treat the disease and went into remission in 1988.
All of the time working at the mill David and Penny ran the ranch. They had 400 head of sheep and 30 cows. They worked side by side.
David worked on the ranch and did a little consulting. But in 1995 the Wagner's came out of remission with a vengeance. David applied for Veterans Administration Health Care in 2003. He had cancer under his tongue and had surgery in 2005. Healed from that and then in 2008 the cancer had returned in his neck. He had surgery, and underwent chemo and radiation. In August 2009 st. Elizabeth's Hospice team took over his care. And came to help us all. We thank them for their compassion and care
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to either the Corning Veterans Funeral Squad or St. Elizabeth Hospice in Red Bluff.
Memorial graveside services will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at the Kirkwood Cemetery.
