Felimon Adrid, Sr. 90, passed away on February 5, 2012.
He was born November 22, 1922 in Rosario Cavite, Philippines. Felimon (Phil) began his career with the U.S. Navy during in World War II. After the Japanese took control and bombed the city of Bataan, Phil escaped to Corregidor where he was captured and made to walk the infamous Bataan Death March.
Phil retired from military service after 20 years, but continued as a Program Analyst for the Federal Government for 19 years. His commitment to serving others continued into his private life.
Phil was an active community organizer who started and chaired many organizations. As an associate of then San Diego Mayor Frank Curran, and Councilman (Governor) Pete Wilson, his most notable accomplishments was to convince world-renowned cardiac surgeon and medical pioneer in heart plants, Dr. Michael E. DeBakey to donate his services to perform heart surgery on a boy from the Philippines.
In addition, Phil was instrumental in creating a program to bring free medical and free meals to senior citizens. Phil was a forward thinker and exceptional leader, and he paved the way for future generations to benefit from the programs and services he helped champion.
Phil left a legacy in which we can all take pride.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years Eleanor Mandel Adrid, seven stepchildren, and five children from his first marriage to Rosalia Dungca, along with 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Viewing is scheduled on Friday, February 8, 2013 from 1-9pm at Glen Abbey Memorial Park, Chapel of the Roses, 3838 Bonita Road, Bonita, CA.
A Mass is scheduled on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 10am at Saint Rita's Catholic Church, located at 5124 Churchward Street, San Diego, CA. 92114. Funeral Services will at Glen Abbey after the mass service. Published in San Diego Union-Tribune on February 7, 2013
