Robert Henry Austin was born in Tarboro, Edgecombe Co, NC, the eldest of four known children (1 boy/3 girls) born to merchant, banker and Justice of the Peace, Henry Austin and his wife, Lydia Pippin.

His father was born in England about 1775 and came to Tarboro in the early 1800s and was instrumental in forming the Missionary Baptist Church in Tarboro. His mother was daughter of Ensign Joseph Pippen who migrated to Edgecombe from Talbot County MD in 1763, and married in Edgecombe County to Lucretia Cherry.

Robert attended UNC and later became a dry goods merchant, operating as R. A. Austin & Co in Tarboro ca. 1851. He later served as Treasurer Edgecombe County for 30 or 40 yrs.

In his late 20's or early 30's, Robert married the much younger Sarah Jennet Jeffreys of Franklin County, daughter of wealthy farmer and merchant, William Jeffreys & Elizabeth Hartsfield. The marriage produced two sons and a daughter and a business partnership with her father, William "Buck" Jeffreys in 1848. Children:

* William Henry Jeffreys Austin (1840-1865)
* Charles Jeffreys Austin (1842-1920)
* Elizabeth Austin (ca. 1845)

In later years, Robert and his son Charles operated brickyards in Tarboro. (Charles married Emily S. Chisman of Hampton, Virginia, and they lived in Tarboro.)

His wife, Sarah, died in 1858 and the widower married two years later to Delha Dancy, the widow of Agesilaus S Foreman, and daughter of Francis Little Dancy and Charlotte Sessoms of Tarboro. This union produced no children.

Delha died in 1876 and Robert passed 14 years later in 1890 at age 80.
