Conscripted, upon reporting he enlisted 7/16/1862 at Alamance County and was mustered into "E" Co. NC 1st Infantry as a Private.
He was transferred out on 9/20/1862 having been commissioned as 3rd Lieut into "F" Co. NC 53rd Infantry.
Wounded by gunshot in head and left hand 7/3/1863 Gettysburg, PA.; hospitalized 7/13/1863 Richmond, VA.; returned to duty 7/20/1863.
Promoted to 2nd Lieut 7/16/1863.
He was Killed In Action in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA.
The 53rd Infantry Regiment completed its organization in April, 1862, at Camp Mangum, near Raleigh, North Carolina. The men were recruited in the following counties: Guilford, Mecklenburg, Chatham, Surry, Alamance, Stokes, Union, and Wilkes.
