Enlisted on 5/4/1861 at Warren County, NC, he was mustered into "C" Co. NC 12th Infantry as a Private.
Promoted 3/25/1862 3rd Lieut of Company K.
Wounded during Seven Days' Battles; hospitalized 7/4/1862 Richmond, VA.; returned 11/30/1862.
Promoted to 2nd Lieut 3/12/1863.
Promoted to 1st Lieut 5/24/1863.
Mortally wounded 5/12/1864 in the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, VA.

The 12th Infantry Regiment, formerly the 2nd Volunteers, was organized near Garysburg, North Carolina, in May, 1861. Its companies were drawn from the counties of Warren, Granville, Catawba, Cleveland, Nash, Duplin, Halifax, and Robeson.
