Caleb T. Abell (1843-1897) was born on March 24, 1843 in Warren Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, the son of Caleb (1802-1878) and Rebecca (Gauff, 1811-1885) Abell, both of whom were born in Massachusetts. The younger Caleb had at least two older sisters and two younger ones. The family moved to Warren no later than 1833. On July 2, 1863, Caleb enlisted in the Union Army as a corporal. According to the 1870 census, he was living with his parents in Warren and was identified as a merchant and was presumably single. His father having died in 1878, he was living with his widowed mother in 1880. At that time, he was farming. Sometime between 1870 and 1877, he married Harriet E. Ball (1855-1941), and in the latter year, a daughter, Myra, was born to them. The couple had two other daughters, Clara (1886-1974) and Mary (1890-1979). They also had a son, George (1881-1896), who died at just fifteen years of age. Caleb died on August 12, 1897, a year after his son’s death, at age fifty four and is buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery in Towanda, Pennsylvania. Harriet lived until 1941 and is also buried in Oak Hill, as are all of their children.
