Harry W. "Hank" Akins, 73, of Blairsville died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002, at Latrobe Area Hospital.
He was born July 15, 1929, in Hillside, Derry Township, the son of the late William Harry and Mary Agnes Jenkins Akins.

Mr. Akins was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Blairsville, the VFW Post 5821 of Blairsville and the American Legion Post 324 in Derry.

He was a 1948 graduate of Derry Township High School and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Prior to his retirement in 1991, he worked for Hockinsmith Corp. of Penn, Pa., for 26 years and for the Blairsville Police Dept. from 1951 to 1961. He served on the the Blairsville Borough Council for 12 years and served as mayor of Blairsville from 1990 to 1996.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary Martha Barr Akins, whom he married on April 12, 1951; two sons: David and his wife Patricia, and William Harry and his wife, Dianna, all of Blairsville; a daughter, Brenda Lear and her husband Dan of Blairsville; eight grandchildren: James Lear and his wife Kelley, Eli Akins, Jason Lear, Michael Akins, Jamie Lear, Heidi Akins, Kelli Akins and Billijo Akins.

Funeral services were held Sunday in Shoemaker Funeral Home, Blairsville with Pastor Rusty McClurg officiating. Interment followed in Blairsville Cemetery.

Military rites were accorded by the Blairsville VFW Post 5821 and the American Legion.
