Luciano Ortega (B: ~1835) served 6 months from 1861 to 1862 as a Private with Company C of the 3rd New Mexico Mounted Infantry (muster papers; M242 roll 3). Between 30 Aug and 10 Oct, 1861; the 3rd Regiment NM Mounted Infantry was organized at Fort Union and Albuquerque, NM. The unit, and others, were hastily recruited to repel Texas invaders during the American Civil War. Their duty was at Fort Union until February, 1862. The federal forces were under the command of Colonel Edward Canby. On 21 Feb, they saw action against the Texan Confederate Cavalry led by Brigadier General Henry H. Sibley at the Battle of Valverde, NM. Between 13 to 22 Apr, the 3rd pursued Confederate forces. Until May 1862, their duty was in Central, Northern and Santa Fe Districts. On 31 May 1862, the unit mustered out of service May 31, 1862.

On 30 Sep 1890, Luciano Ortega filed for his military pension for his service with Company C, 3rd NM Mounted Infantry. On 9 July 1917, his widow Manuelita M. Ortega filed for the same pension (Pension Card).

Luciano and Manuelita's identified children were Juan B. and Carolina.
