Dorsey Astor Boatright, 97, of St. Simons Island, died Friday, July 9, 2010 at Magnolia Manor Nursing Home on St. Simons Island.

Born April 14, 1913 in Bacon County to the late Thomas J. and Effie Smith Boatright, he was retired as a welder with Brunswick Pulp and Paper Company after 31 years and 10 months. He was a member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church and was a member of Masonic Lodge 214 for 60 years. As a young man, he helped build Fort Stewart, Fort Gordon and Hunter Army Air Field. He worked in turpentine from 1934 to 1938, and was the substitute mail carrier for Bristol from 1928 to 1942. After his retirement in 1976, he moved to his beloved home place in Pierce County, and raised cows for a number of years and enjoyed his favorite pastime of fishing.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ruby Loper Boatright; a daughter, Norma Jean Boatright Smith; a grandson, Jeffery Lindsey Knight; a great-great grandson: Jay Paul, and a brother, Alfred Franklin Boatright.

Survivors include a son, Stanley Warren (Frances) Boatright, Brunswick; two daughters, Alfreda Faye (Wilbur) Bice, Mobile AL, and Barbara Joyce (Dell) Knight, St. Simons Island; grandchildren, Steven Warren Boatright, Brian Eric Boatright, Maria Jean Smith, Marlene Lee Smith, Marsha Diane Smith, Amber LeAnne Miller, Melissa JoAnne Bice, Wilbur Frank Bice IV, Heather Diane Annable, Vann Patrick Knight and Swen Garrick Knight; 24 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Thelma Gibson, four nephews and two nieces.

Visitation will take place from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 12, from the Pine Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Ed Hurst officiating.

Interment will follow at 2:30 p.m. in Bristol Baptist Church Cemetery, with Masonic graveside rites.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Steven Boatright, Brian Boatright, Wilbur (Will) Bice, Vann Knight, Swen Knight and great-grandson Brent Boatright.

Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Boatright, Al Boatright, Dwayne Gibson, Donnie Gibson, Bud Peacock, Johnny Harris and Ray Jones.
