James Jackson Bellis was the son of Sarah Ann Owen and Samuel Bellis, both of Kentucky, then early residents to Ray County, MO. J. J. Bellis resided in the vicinity of his birth for the greater part of his life. His siblings were: Isabell Margaret (Leake), Mary Charlotte (Parrott) and William McCrosky Bellis.
He married Mary Etta Tarwater on March 13, 1870. They had 11 children: first and second children died at birth and were not named, Johnnie (died young), Willie (died young), Sally (Dugan), Alonzo, Maudie Jane (Dugan), Ed, Nora (Dugan), Charley J. and Mary Charlotte (Durbin).
