Steele, Allen Passed away on June 8 at his home in Walnut Creek, Calif. His 89th birthday would have been July 26. He was a Plant Financial Controller for Swift & Co. at units in Illinois, Indiana and New Jersey, and a Sales and Marketing Financial Controller of the Swift Premium Meats Division. He retired in 1987 after 47 years. Allen lived in New Jersey for 34 years and Illinois, including Hazel Crest and Orland Park, for 40, before moving to Lafayette, Calif. in 1997. He received a Business Administration Degree, majoring in Accounting, from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J. He felt deeply about the need for higher education and inspired and helped finance many young people to continue their education. He served three years as an aviation radioman with the Navy in the Pacific during World War II and returned to San Francisco on the U.S.S. Hornet in 1945. He was a member of the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, as well as the Loyalty Lodge No. 33 F & A.M. since 1957. He was an avid traveler with frequent trips around the globe to all seven continents. He loved sharing stories and gifts from his travels. He is survived by his wife Margaret, sister Jean Mackey, son and daughter-in-law Richard and Jan Steele of Laguna Niguel, Calif., and daughter Linda Sedgwick of East Peoria, Ill. He was especially proud of his grandchildren, Drs. David and Julie Steele, Ellen and Jeremiah Ramsey, Jessica and Dan Ochwat and his great grandchildren, Flynn and Maxwell Steele, Benjamin and Natalie Ramsey, and Selden Ochwat. By marriage to Margaret, he loved an additional six children, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. His first wife, Hannah, died in 1992, his grandson, Don Steele, died in 2009, and his son-in-law, James Sedgwick, died in 2002. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, June 20, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Lafayette-Orinda Presbyterian Church, 49 Knox Drive, Lafayette, Calif. Interment will be at the church's Kurth Memorial Garden. A gathering for friends and Byron Park residents will be Wednesday at 10:30 am.
