HELEN RAMSDELL BINGHAM
Helen Ramsdell Bingham, 102 years old, died peacefully at her home on Friday, November 4, 2011. Born in Southwest Harbor, ME on May 15, 1909, she lived in Maine, Cuba, Palm Beach, Vermont, and New York during her lifetime. Helen married Gustavo Sanchez de Bustamante on October 15, 1936, with the ceremony being performed in a single engine airplane flying over Manhattan, piloted by her brother. They flew to the United States in early 1959 in their Beechcraft Bonanza, just before the airports were closed following Castro's takeover. They settled in Florida, until Mr. De Bustamante's death in 1978, after 41 years of marriage. She later married Harry Payne Bingham, Jr. in 1994. They divided their time between Jupiter Island, FL, Manhattan, NY, and Shaftsbury, VT. They were married until his death in January 2005. Helen has the distinction of having been the first woman pilot in Cuba. She was a member of the Ninety-Nines, an organization of women pilots established in 1929 for the support and advancement of women pilots in aviation. She and her first husband flew their own aircraft throughout North America and Cuba, and were members of the Sportsman Pilots Association. As a pilot, golfer, bridge player, and active volunteer for Hospice, Helen was known as "Twink" to her friends. She is survived by five step-grand- children from her first marriage, Francis Facciolo of Brooklyn NY, Luisa Facciolo of North Sandwich, NH, Adam Facciolo of Hancock, ME, April Carpenter of Bronxville, NY, and Irene Facciolo on Montpelier, VT. Survived by two step-grandchildren from her second marriage, P.J. Bingham, IV and Lucinda Jewell Donohoe both of the Boston area; and thirteen step-great grandchildren. Her club affiliations include the Colony Club in New York and the Everglades Club in Palm Beach, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Hospice of Palm Beach County, 5300 East Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33407. A private inurnment will take place in the Columbarium at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-By-The- Sea, Palm Beach, FL.
