From Holland St. John - "Archibald ("Arch") was the son of John II and Amanda (Lucas) Freeman and was born March 26, 1835 at Conquest, New York. Arch had nine brothers and sisters: Elmena (my great grandmother), Robert Lucas, Daniel, Betsy, Juan Frenandez, Caroline, John Jay, Orrin and William Warren. When he was less than six months old, his parents took him to Michigan, then to Wisconsin and, lastly, to Clayton County, Iowa, where he spent the remaining thirty years of his life on his farm in the Hewitt Creek neighborhood of Sperry Township. He was musically inclined, fond of the violin, and made several in his spare moments. When a young boy, he had a severe case of pneumonia ("lung fever") which affected one side of his body, enough to make him unable to pass muster as a strong able-bodied man. Consequently, he was never a soldier. His farm was our miles south of Volga City. On March 19, 1856 he married Lucinda ("Cindy") Sophia King by the Reverend James G. Whitford in Clayton County. They had eight children: Eulalia Alzina (born 1857), John (died young), Dewitt (died young), Daniel Rufus, Anna Diana (born July 1865), William Fernando (born July 21, 1868), Francis Ferry (born August 11, 1874) and Jessie Floy (born November 25, 1878). The U S Census of 1850 paints this picture of those living in Arch's home: A. P. Freeman (26, farming in Sperry Township, value of real estate estimated at $500), Lucinda (21), Eulalie (1), Rhoda King (49), Justus King (55, farmer), Rufus King (16), Dianna King (13) and William Freeman (18). William was Archibald's younger brother; Lucinda's mother, father and siblings were also living on the farm. In the 1870 census they had four children living at home: Eulalia (11), Daniel (9), Anna (5) and William (2). Archibald's older brother Jean Fernandez Freeman (40) was also living with them. By 1880 four children were at home: Anna (14), William (11), Francis (5) and Floy J. (3). Lucinda's father Justus King (73) was also living with them. Archibald died of pneumonia on February 22, 1883 at the age of forty-seven. He is buried at the Garretson Cemetery near Volga, Clayton County, Iowa. John and Dewitt, their little sons, are also buried there. His widow Lucinda moved to Washington state in 1900 and divided her time between Seattle and Castle Rock, Washington. (She was the sister of Diana King who married Orrin Freeman, Arch's brother). She died May 6, 1915 in Lexington, Cowlitz County, Washington."
