Chico Enterprise-Record, Friday, September 20, 1985: "Nell Eleanor Arens. A funeral for Nell Eleanor Arens, 89, of Chico will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Chico Funeral Home. She died Wednesday at her home.
"A native Chicoan, she was born on June 14, 1896, to William B. and Josephine Smith. She met Herbert O. Arens while attending Chico Normal School and married him on Sept. 11, 1916. They lived in Fresno and Sacramento for a few years but later found a permanent home in Chico. Together they started Westside Gardens nursery in 1923. They sold the business in 1950 and retired.
"She was a member of the Chico Grange, Native Daughters of the Golden West, Eagles Auxiliary No. 218 in Chico and the Pythian Sister, Temple No. 73.
"Surviving her is a son, Herbert, of Chico; a daughter, Beverly Nichols of Valdosta, GA; a sister, Adeline DeWitt of Sacramento; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
"A pastor from the Neighborhood Church will officiate at the services and entombment will be in the Chico Memorial Mausoleum by the side of her husband, Herbert, who died August 4.
"Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the chapel."
