Resident of Concord Elena de Prosse (née de la Roza) died peacefully on June 20, 2008, in Walnut Creek, California in the company of her daughters. She was the devoted wife of her late husband of 57 years, Eugene P. de Prosse; the loving mother of four daughters, Janet Elizabeth de Prosse (Katherine Hudson), Karle Gene de Prosse, Gail Erica de Prosse (Robert Lauriston), and Alexandra de Prosse Bonshahi (Behruz Bonshahi); and the adoring grandmother of Jasmine Nilufer Bonshahi. She is also survived by a nephew, Gil de la Roza, and a niece, Nichole de la Roza, the children of her late brother, Joaquín de la Roza, Jr. Elena was born on July 30, 1925, in New York City and grew up in Cuba - in the village of Tuinucú, near Sancti Spíritus. Cuba was the native country of her father, Joaquín de la Roza, Sr. Her mother, Katharyn de la Roza (née Corrigan) was a native of Oswego, New York. Elena attended Cornell University and later graduated from Goddard College in Vermont with a degree in Spanish Literature. She was a Spanish teacher, a passionate advocate for Hispanics living and working in California, a multi-talented craftsperson, a quilter, a watercolorist, a committed activist who worked for peace and justice, and a long-time member of the Mt. Diablo Unitarian Universalist Church in Walnut Creek. A memorial service will be held at the church on Saturday, July 12, at 10:30 a.m., with a buffet reception following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that financial contributions be sent to Amnesty International, the Mt. Diablo Peace and Justice Center, or the Alzheimer's Association.
