Saturday Afternoon
Seneca B, Chatfield passed away early Thursday morning at Lakeland Hospital. He had been transferred from the University Hospital on Tuesday after being there five weeks.
He was one of eight children born in a grout house on the homestead in the Town of Troy, Nov. 15, 1875, the son of Silas and Catherine Kling Chatfield. He attended the Adams grade school and graduated from the East Troy High School in 1900.
He taught country school on year and then took a business course in Milwaukee, and worked there a few years.
On Dec. 4, 1907, he was married to Ella Rhode and they ,moved into the big house that his father built to replace the small house.
They helped build the Adams Methodist Church and were faithful members. Seneca was secretary of the Adams Creamery for several years, Town Clerk for 25 years, and belonged to the Tibbetts Grange for many years.
They had no children of their own but were foster parents to four children Pearl Barker who remained with them thru the years, Delberta Barker, who is now Mrs. Roy Bigelow of Englewood, Colorado; Harold Bellas who is teaching in Wausau; Lorraine Bellas who is Mrs. Donald Schuman of Millard.
Two sisters and five brothers preceded him in death.
He is survived by the wife, four foster children, nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral Services were held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Rohleder Memorial Home with the Rev. George Lester, a retired Minister if Milwaukee, who began his ministry in the Troy Center Area and The Rev. Anthonle Van den Doel of the LaGrange Methodist Church.
Burial was in the Adams Cemetery. The Grange had part of the Grave service.

The Chatfield's were an interesting and generous family. For years they hosted the Chatfield family reunions. Seneca dug the graves by hand for those whose families wished to bury their relatives in Adams Cemetery.

If you stop and walk around, you'll find the Chatfield's and their foster daughter, Pearl Barker's graves. There are also graves of neighbors and friends whose names you might recognize.
