Surrounded by her loving family, Barbara Montgomery Arnold, 71, Mechanicsburg, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, March 7, 2011 following an extended illness.
Born October 7, 1939 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Robert R. and Josephine D. (McGoun) Montgomery, was a 1957 graduate and valedictorian of Oakmont High School and a graduate and board member of Grove City College.
She was a member and elder of Paxton Presbyterian Church, and was a member of the Paxton Kirkers Sunday School Class. She was also on the Board of Christian Churches United; Past President of the Junior League of Harrisburg; and in 1991 was the Child Advocate of the Year for the Children's Playroom. Most of all, she was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many, and her greatest joy came from selflessly caring for those she loved.
Her beloved husband, John A. Arnold, passed away in 1994 after 34 years of marriage.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Beverly Stephansen.
Surviving is her son, John M. Arnold (and his wife, Kara); her daughter, Elizabeth; one brother, Dr. Robert (and his wife, Jan) Montgomery; five grandchildren, John, Kate and Robert Arnold and Sophie and Jahn Otto Stephansen; her son-in-law, Jan Stephansen; four nieces, one nephew; and a host of friends, all of whom loved her and cared for her during her illness and will miss her greatly.
Services will be held 10 am, Friday, March 11, 2011 at Grace United Methodist Church, 216 State Street, Harrisburg, with the Rev. John W. Green, her pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Paxton Churchyard next to her husband.
Friends will be received from 6 pm to 9 pm Thursday at W. Orville Kimmel Funeral Home, 2001 Market Street, Harrisburg.
Contributions may be made in her memory to the John A. Arnold Scholarship Fund, Grove City College, 100 Campus Drive, Grove City, PA 16127-2104 or to Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, PA 17110.
