Services were held at 10 a.m. today at Noel-Henderson Funeral Home in Pekin. The Rev. Larry Kirk officiated. Burial was in Wenona Cemetery.
He was born March 26, 1918 in Hudson, a son of Carl and Sarah Ummel. He married Doris Shuck on March 5, 1988 in Pekin. She survives.
Also surviving are sons: Joey Burkey of Sarasota, Florida and Ronald Ummel of Baytown, Texas; a stepson: Jeff Shuck of Carbondale; a stepdaughter: Julie Beaupre of Pekin; seven grandchildren; and a brother: Lyle Ummel of Phoenix, Arizona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister.
A 1939 graduate of the University of Illinois, he had worked for the U of I Extension Service in Hancock and Tazewell counties. He was a regional sales manager for Sommer Brothers Seed Co. and a newsman for WSIV radio, both in Pekin. He served as farm service director for Midwest Television and WMBD and WCIA in Champaign. He also served as president of the Illinois Broadcasters Association in 1963. A member of Pekin Cosmopolitan Club, he served as president of the organization in 1988. A former Boy Scout Leader, he was a member of the Broken Arrow, Pekin Moose Lodge and Congregational United Church of Christ in Pekin.
