Norma Evjen, age 97, of Canby, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at the Sanford Canby Medical Center in Canby.

Funeral service will be 10:30am on Monday, June 24th at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Porter, MN with Rev. Ellen Munter officiating. Visitation will be 5 to 7pm on Sunday, June 23rd at the Birk Funeral Home in Canby with a prayer service at 6:30pm. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Porter, MN with military honors by the Porter American Legion Post 457.

Norma Hazel Evjen was born on April 23, 1916 in Madison, Minnesota to parents Martin and Annie (Nelson) Hanson. She was raised on a farm in rural Canby and she graduated from Canby High School. After graduation she went to work for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Washington as a secretary. She then proudly served her country in the United States Navy. She was stationed in Long Beach, California until being honorably discharged in 1946 in San Diego, California.

Norma was united in marriage to Alvin O. Evjen on February 5, 1947 at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in Canby. To this union they were blessed with four children. They raised their family on Evjen family farm near Porter which had been in the family for over 100 years. Once the children grown and gone she worked as a nurse's aid at the Canby Hospital and nursing home.

She enjoyed reading, baking and traveling. She also enjoyed gardening, canning and making leafse and crafts. Her most treasured moments were spent with family and friends especially with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Norma was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Chruch in Porter along with the Ladies Aide. She was also a member of the Porter American Legion Post 457.

Grateful for having shared Norma's life are her four children: Rachel (Dick) Alpaugh of Victoria, MN, Joanne (Michael) Sirard of Duluth, MN, Michael (Karen) Evjen of Porter, MN, Mark (Joann) Evjen of Dawson, MN; eight grandchildren David Alpaugh, Michael Alpaugh, Michelle Evjen, Martin Evjen, Dylan Evjen, Taylor Evjen, Clayton Evjen and Asha Godfrey; 14 great-grandchildren and 4 more coming soon; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Annie Hanson; her husband, Alvin Evjen; one sister, Lorraine Schuttler; one son-in-law Richard Lynn and one great-granddaughter.
