Brownsburg, Jan. 28. -- Ashbel G. Beard died at his late residence near New Providence church on Tuesday morning after a lingering and painful illness of several weeks. He was 76 years of age and one of the most respected and prosperous farmers of Rockbridge, a man of strict integrity and sterling character.
He was considered a model farmer and took especial interest in the growing of fancy and well bred cattle.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rachel F. Beard, one daughter, Miss Jessie A. Beard and the following sons: Trenton R. Beard and Porter A. Beard, who reside on the home farm near Brownsburg; Oser B. Beard of Middlebrook; A. Dewey Beard of New Hope; and Clarence A. Beard of Waynesboro, and one brother, John D. Beard of Weyers Cave.
The funeral services were held on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at New Providence, of which church he was a consistent member. The very appropriate services were conducted by the Rev. Clarence Woods, assisted by the Rev. H.A. Turner, D.D. The interment was made in the adjoining cemetery. The floral tributes were very pretty.
The active pallbearers were, S.W. Brooks, C.S. Dice, D.J. Whipple, Frank Patterson, R.J. McNutt and V.W. Brooks; honorary, J.W. Culton, J.R. Brown, D.E. East, C.H. Wade, A.S. Brown and T.S. Rees. Flower bearers were Otto Miller, Wayt Miller, Arthur Miller, Letcher Clemmer, John Miller and Walter E. Beard.
