John Robert (J.R.) Reed was committed to Eastern State Hospital in Washington on 17 Jan 1913. He was taken to the state hospital by his brother-in-law J.W. Foster. It was reported that J.R. could not control his drinking and he became violent with his sister, his mother, and J.W. J.R was apparently living with Joel W. & Laura Ellen (Reed) Foster. It was also noted in his record that he had a "scar of depressed fracture over left parietal region". J.R. was unsure of how that had happened, but thought it may have happened when he fell off a pier in Seattle years before. J.R. believed he owned a multi-million dollar placer mine in Alaska, but was unconcerned about being away from it, because he could find another one. On the 1910 Federal Census J.R. did appear to be a miner in Hardin, Crook County, Oregon and was living at that time away from his wife and children. I believe this J.R. Reed to be my J.R. Reed. The last reference I have to him living with his family is on John Vernon Reed's birth certificate in 1902. It is also the first reference I have found to him being a miner rather than a farmer. His wife Malinda (Hudson) Reed is listed with her children alone but married in the 1910 Census. In 1920 she is alone with the kids, but the marriage field is blank (it is the only blank marriage field on that page).
Mary Jane (Kidwell) Reed and William George Reed are on the same census page with J.W. Foster and L.E. (Reed) Foster in 1900 (Concord, Asotin, Washington). I haven't seen a 1910 census for any of the family living in Asotin, Washington, so I wonder if their area of Asotin was skipped?
I have the death Certificate for John Robert Reed from his medical record from Eastern State Hospital. He died on 16 May 1924 in Medical Lake, Washington, USA.
