Doris Witt

Born April 5, 1922 in Bridgeport, WA to Nell & Stanley Slade, she passed away peacefully on Sunday June 16, 2013. Her 91 years of life were filled with love of family, love of friends, and the desire to care for others.

Her childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood were spent in Bridgeport. From there she entered Washington State College in the fall of 1940. Her education and her life - like those of so many of her generation - were interrupted by WW II. She made the choice to serve and joined the United States Marine Corps to aid in the war effort. When her service was complete she returned to Pullman to resume her studies. There she met the love of her life, Scott Witt. They were married in Everett, WA in 1947. After brief stops in Pullman and Spokane (and the arrival of their first child, Colleen) together they began family life in Longview, WA as Scott embarked on what would be a 31 year career with Weyerhaeuser.

In 1959 that career took Doris & her family to Tacoma, WA. There a life of great friendships and numerous activities - skiing, golf, bridge club, church - took shape. She became an accomplished cook and hostess; she loved having dinners, luncheons, and informal barbeques for their many friends & acquaintances. Those that were ill or afflicted in some way often found her at their doorstep, ready to help in whatever way she could. And then there was the mutual love she & Scott had for WSU - she was a Coug for life.

Upon Scott's retirement they embarked upon a wonderful life that included many trips to their vacation home on Maui where she routinely began her mornings with a walk up & back her beloved Kamaole Beach. Together they travelled the world, taking many trips to exotic locales - like Europe, Asia, and (of course) Pullman - with both friends & family. Their life together was a rich and full one.

In her later years the fog of dementia descended upon her and she was slowly robbed of many things; the great joy she derived from her home & kitchen, her ability to communicate with those near & dear to her, to travel and take in the world around her. What she never lost was the love and tireless devotion of her husband, Scott. Their long-running relationship turned a different page as her condition advanced...but rather than diminish their love it seemed, instead, to grow in a very sweet and undeniable way.

Doris is survived by her husband of over 65 years, Scott of Dupont, WA and her children & their spouses; Colleen Wann (Presley) of Kapa'a, Kauai, Janet Bell (Rob) of Ballard, and Greg Witt (Patty) of Renton, as well as three grandchildren - Keala, Lei, and Connor - and one great-grandchild, Hanalei.

Great thanks and appreciation goes out from the family to the staff at Patriot's Landing and Liberty Lane where she lived out her final years. They were wonderful in their care for her. Also, to those at Madigan Army Medical Center whose palliative care helped to make her final days peaceful and comfortable.

A private interment will be held at St. Luke's Episcopal Church on July 7. That afternoon a reception in her memory will be held in the living room at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club from 3-5 pm.
