Started working at Lefler's Place in the Pee Dee community of Montgomery County, North Carolina at a young age and on January 1, 1949 purchased the business with his wife Katherine Louise "Kate" Ussery Boggan. They operated this landmark business, well known for its barbecue, for over thirty-six years until their retirement in October, 1985.


Edmund Alexander "Sandy" Boggan, 88, of 1786 Pee Dee Road, Mount Gilead, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at Forrest Oakes Healthcare Center in Albemarle, North Carolina.

He was born February 14, 1915 in Montgomery County, North Carolina and was a son of the late Joseph Martin Boggan and Annie Louise Avett Boggan. He was married to the late Katherine Louise "Kate" Ussery Boggan. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Marshall Boggan. Mr. Boggan was the former owner of Lefler's Place and a member of Stoney Fork Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday, March 7, 2003 at Stoney Fork Baptist Church in Mount Gilead with Rev. Michael Madaris, Rev. Lonnie Gibson and Rev. Gary Long officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation is 6:30 to 8:30 PM Thursday, March 6, 2003 at Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle. At other times the family will be at his residence, 1786 Pee Dee Road, Mount Gilead.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Myrna Boggan Bruton of Mount Gilead; three nephews, John Boggan of Emerald Isle, North Carolina, Luther Boggan and wife Vivian of Mount Gilead, and Yoga Ussery of Kernersville, North Carolina; four nieces, Elaine Frances and husband Benny of Orlando, Florida, Elizabeth Kimrey and husband Wayne of Jacksonville, Florida, Mitsy Wood and husband Chip of Clemmons, North Carolina, and Myra M. Hamilton and husband Billy of Siler City, North Carolina.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Hartsell Funeral Home in Albemarle is assisting the family.
