Rose Mae Lee-Cortez, 57, of Aztec, beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, auntie and friend, went home to her Heavenly Father on Friday, Oct. 16, 2009. Rose was born Jan. 8, 1952, in Beclabito, to John and Ester Coleman-Lee. She is from the Tti'zi'tani, born for To'aheed li'inii. Her maternal clan is Ta'chininl l; her paternal clan is Tsinsi'Kaadinii.
She attended school at the Beclabito Day School, Teec Nos Pos Boarding School, Phoenix Indian School and Haskell Indian Nation University.
Rose was employed with the San Juan County Executive Office for 16 years, and for Diné Bail Bonds. She was a representative for Avon and a Mary Kay consultant. She worked for Wal-Mart, BHP, the Internal Revenue Service in Phoenix, Ariz., and for Secretary of State Henry Kissinger at the State Department in Washington, D.C.
She was preceded in death by her father, John Lee; maternal grandparents, Joe and Lucy Coleman; paternal grandparents, Atcitty Begay and Hosteen Bewhoo Adin Bisii; and by her brothers, Will Lee and Raymond Van Lee Sr.
Rose leaves behind her husband, Thomas L. Cortez; four sons, Jason (Raneé) Cortez, Tomas R. Cortez, Orlando (Shonnell) Cortez and Gabriel L. Cortez, all of Aztec. She also is survived by her mother, Ester Lee; siblings, Daniel Van Lee Sr., Maetah Atcitty, Edith Lee and Isabelle George; and by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Viewing will be at 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Hwy. 491 South in Shiprock, followed at 10 a.m. by a celebration of her life.
Our beloved Rose will be laid to rest at the family plot in Beclabito.
