B. Romaine Hartman Gulden, died peacefully on March 26, 2008 at the age of 97.
Romaine was born on September 18, 1910, to Emma Jane and Charles Bentz Hartman in Lemoyne, Pennsylvania and was raised on a small farm near Gettysburg.
Romaine trained to be a nurse at York Hospital and later worked at the Hanover Hospital. In 1935 she married Donald L. Gulden of Biglerville; her brother-in-law, Rev. Ralph Birke performed the ceremony. The couple lived in Brooklyn, NY where she worked at the 1939 Worlds Fair while her husband attended Columbia University. In 1940 they settled in Harrisburg where Romaine would be a loving wife, mother and grandmother for the next 68 years.
Music was an integral part of her life. Romaine sang in the church choir, played the piano, organ, trumpet and the ukulele. She was the first to laugh at her own bad jokes and had a heart as big as the sun. She always took in strays; from puppies to humans she could not say no to someone in need.
Romaine was predeceased by her husband.
She is survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Donna Gulden Fitz; grandchildren, Benjamin and Tari Fitz, Jody and Jennifer (Fitz) Chort and 4 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life for Mrs. Gulden will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at 2 p.m., at Neill Funeral Home, 3501 Derry Street, Harrisburg, PA, with Rev. Laurie Roberts officiating. A viewing 1 hour prior will be held at the funeral home. Interment will be in Biglerville.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you follow Romaine's lead and perform a random act of kindness in her honor.
