VEAZIE, FORT FAIRFIELD and WATERVILLE – Josephine C. Beckwith, 99, wife of the late John C. Beckwith, died Friday, June 17, 2011, at Lakewood Continuing Care Center, Waterville. Born July 27, 1911, in Boothbay Harbor, she was a first generation American, the second of three daughters and four sons of Stephen Louis Carbone and Adelaide Rumazza Carbone, immigrants from Northern Italy.
Growing up she helped take care of younger siblings for her mother and worked as a clerk in the family business, Boothbay Fruit Co., located on the wharf in the harbor. Jo attended the University of Maine. She was an outstanding student athlete belonging to several honor societies, a member of student government, and playing varsity basketball and soccer. She majored in Latin and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1932. Later that year she received her Public Secondary School Teacher's Certificate. Teaching jobs were very scarce during the depression so Jo began her social work career with the ERA, which later became the Work Project Administration. She found an attraction and enjoyment in helping others so she entered Boston University. She received a Master of Science degree in social work in 1943. Jo returned to her beloved state of Maine and secured work with the state office of child welfare. Two years later with many afflicted veterans returning from war, she transferred to the Veterans Administration at Togus and worked out of the Bangor office. She was assigned the Down East and Northern Maine territories and traveled more than 30,000 miles each year. Her superior work in aiding Maine veterans for 27 years was acknowledged and rewarded by several commendations. She retired from civil service in 1972. Jo met her first husband and veteran, Patrick Feeney, in 1944. They were married in Boothbay Harbor and spent many happy years together in Veazie. It was not uncommon for Jo to help out after hours at his restaurant, Sweeney's, even after having just returned from a weeklong veterans' assignment in Aroostook County. Pat was taken from her while square dancing in 1970. The Lord blessed her for her lifelong caring for others and as fate would have it, became reacquainted with a widowed, longtime friend of the family from Fort Fairfield. In 1972, she and John Beckwith were married at St. John's Catholic Church, Bangor.
She is survived by her sister, Ernestine Fossa of Dexter; multiple nieces and nephews and their families; and members of the Delbert and Constance Beckwith family. She was predeceased by her sister, Florence Giles; brother, Romolo Carbone, both of Boothbay Harbor; and brothers, Frederick Carbone of Belfast, Frank Carbone, D.M.D., of Beverly, Mass., and Stephen L. Carbone Jr., D.M.D., of Norwood, Mass., James Fossa Jr. and family of Waterville, and Don and Maria Goucher of Wenham, Mass.
Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Veazie. (Bangor Daily News posted 6/20/2011)
