Amelia Mae Askew of Wilburton, Oklahoma died Monday, June 17, 2013 at McAlester Regional Medical Center at the age of 100. Mae was born March 1, 1913 to Virgil and Isolina (Ricki) Palmieri in Lutie, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Italian immigrants who arrived in Lutie, Oklahoma in the early 1900's to work in the coal mines. Mae married Huey Askew. Mr. Askew worked in the oil and gas industry and their family spent several years in Fayetteville, AR and Venezuela, Brazil. They retired in Oklahoma. Mae was a devoted Catholic and a member of the Sacred Heart Church, Wilburton, Oklahoma. She was baptized in the light of Sacred Heart Church's stained glass windows and served the Church daily as a sacristan. Even at age 93, you would find Aunt Mae cleaning the Church from choir loft to altar. Mae was preceded in death by her husband, Huey Askew; parents, Virgil and Isolina Palmieri; sisters, Eda Boyd, Dena Cook, Mary Covoleskie and Alma Carrey; step-children, Dale, Harry D. and Janie Askew. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church. A Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. led by Father Josh Litwack. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at Sacred Heart Church, Wilburton, Oklahoma celebrated by Rev. Christopher Daigle, Rev. Thomas Melton, Rev. Richard Christler and Rev. Josh Litwack. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Wilburton, Oklahoma.
